Foundations of Black Hole Accretion Disk Theory

چکیده
This review covers the main aspects of black hole accretion disk theory. We begin with the view that one of the main goals of the theory is to better understand the nature of black holes themselves. In this light we discuss how accretion disks might reveal some of the unique signatures of strong gravity: the event horizon, the innermost stable circular orbit, and the ergosphere. We then review, from a first-principles perspective, the physical processes at play in accretion disks. This leads us to the four primary accretion disk models that we review: Polish doughnuts (thick disks), Shakura-Sunyaev (thin) disks, slim disks, and advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). After presenting the models we discuss issues of stability, oscillations, and jets. Following our review of the analytic work, we take a parallel approach in reviewing numerical studies of black hole accretion disks. We finish with a few select applications that highlight particular astrophysical applications: measurements of black hole mass and spin, black hole vs. neutron star accretion disks, black hole accretion disk spectral states, and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs).

Evolution of a Rotating Black Hole with a Magnetized Accretion Disk
The effect of an accretion disk on the Blandford-Znajek process and the evolution of a black hole are discussed using a simplified system for the black hole accretion disk in which the accretion rate is supposed to be dominated by the strong magnetic field on the disk. The evolutions of the mass and the angular momentum of the black hole are formulated and discussed with numerical calculations....
متن کاملStability of accretion disk around rotating black holes: a pseudo-general-relativistic fluid dynamical study
We discuss the solution of accretion disk when the black hole is chosen to be rotating. We study, how the fluid properties get affected for different rotation parameters of the black hole. We know that no cosmic object is static in Universe. Here the effect of the rotation of the black hole to the space-time is considered following an earlier work of the author, where the pseudo-Newtonian poten...
متن کاملAccretion Disk Torqued by a Black Hole
If a Kerr black hole is connected to a disk rotating around it by a magnetic field, the rotational energy of the Kerr black hole provides an energy source for the radiation of the disk in addition to disk accretion. The black hole exerts a torque on the disk, which transfers energy and angular momentum between the black hole and the disk. If the black hole rotates faster than the disk, energy a...
متن کاملTowards a New Standard Model for Black Hole Accretion
We briefly review recent developments in black hole accretion disk theory, emphasizing the vital role played by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stresses in transporting angular momentum. The apparent universality of accretion-related outflow phenomena is a strong indicator that large-scale MHD torques facilitate vertical transport of angular momentum. This leads to an enhanced overall rate of angular...
متن کاملA new view on soft - hard spectral transitions
The theory of coronal evaporation predicts the formation of an inner hole in the cool thin accretion disk for mass accretion rates below a certain value (≈ 1/50 of the Eddington mass accretion rate) and the sudden disappearance of this hole when the mass accretion rate rises above that value. The inner edge of the standard thin disk then suddenly shifts inward vvvvfrom about a few hundred Schwa...
